How Sweet Is This?

Do you like ice cream? For many of us, this is like asking, “Do you like to breathe?” Anyone with a dairy allergy is, of course, exempt, and I am sorry for your loss.

For the past five years or so, I’ve been in a small class offered by Rebecca Folsom, a highly gifted Boulder singer/songwriter. The class is called the Vocal Mastery Apprenticeship Program. For me, it’s been like highly effective group therapy, with a musical focus. We bear our souls, sing our hearts out after finding our hearts, and also write songs. One of mine that was fun to write evolved from a prompt: write something with a simple, simple, simple chorus. I started that way, but strayed off of that instruction over time. But when told to think of something simple, I wrote, “Ice cream, so sweet, ice cream, what a treat. Ice cream so fine. I want yours and I want mine. Give me more. Give me more. Give me more.” It had three basic chords and quite a direct message. Later, I modified it into something more sophisticated. Oh, boy. What sophistication.

It does recall an earlier era of ice cream parlors before there were quite as many brand names. I remember sitting at a counter with my legs dangling, seeing the ice cream guy scoop my chosen flavor into a big glass dish, slather it with real hot fudge, and top it off with real whipped cream. Ecstasy. Anyway, in 2017 I recorded “The Ice Cream Song” on my CD “Lay My Burden Down”.  I invited several of my grandchildren to sing on the chorus, and they were happy to do so. They looked adorable in the headphones.
