So many people are in love with music. Sometimes people don’t even quite agree about what music is, or sounds like. Oh, my, there are so many varied tastes. Some are ardent listeners. Some relate to music as background only. Some sing along with gusto to anything, off-key or in perfect harmony or synchrony.
Enough about so many people. This is my blog, so I suppose I’d better talk about my own connection to music, particularly singing and songwriting. It never occurred to me to write a song until I was in my 40’s. Another woman listened to me carefully in a group setting at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, and at the end or our four sessions together, she got in my face and said, “You must write songs.” She knew I was a psychotherapist, loved to sing and intermittently wrote poetry. I was startled, and didn’t ponder her suggestion deeply. I said, “I suppose I could try.” My instinct was was to humor her and engage in pleasant conversation. She moved in even closer and said, like Yoda in the Star Wars series, “There is no TRY. You must DO.” She had never seen Star Wars. Her face was resolute and she had the confidence of an oracle. Then my brain went blank, and I agreed to do it. So I wrote my first song in the car on the drive back to Boulder, humming and scribbling on a yellow pad.
I produced my first two albums in the 1980’s, before CDs were invented. They were cassette tapes that had some success with an interested public. Since then, I have written and recorded five CDs, and have lived to see CDs become almost extinct. Everything is online. Oy. I still prefer things I can put my hands on. Be that as it may, I am delighted to offer you both my music, thoughts and ruminations on this blog. My songs are varied and often don’t fit into the music culture categories. I love ballads, quirky songs with unusual topics (such as “Momma Gave Away My Wedding Gown”), bluegrass, spirituals and a VERY occasional rock song, Being a therapist for a long time has informed some of my themes.I hope you find this blog enjoyable, thought-provoking or both.
