Rounds Are Cool Music

In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, people sang about things that don’t occur to us now. Well, now that I think again, one of the two rounds I’m going to publish on this blog today is a medieval marketing tune. The opening lines are, “Who’ll buy my roses? Who’ll buy my posies? Who’ll buy my lilies, ladies fair?” One hopes that centuries ago, the flower vendor managed to sell a whole bunch of flowers. The artistry and complexity of the tune far exceeds any advertising jingles we hear today.

Some years ago, I went to the recording studio with my daughter Diana and my granddaughter Emily, both of whom can sing. The three of us sang “Come Follow Me” and segued into “Who’ll Buy My Roses”. It was so satisfying to create this music as a family trio! You really have to pay attention to your own voice, and where you are in the song, because so much is going on melodically. “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” move over!

Apparently I never hit the button that says “publish” for this post. Now that I’ve rediscovered this blog, I’m going to add this to the blog now, at least three years later.
